Ryuseiha

Yoshimura Kaun who was the founder of Ryuseiha Ikebana School was born in 1859.  He learned Ikebana when he was 10 years old.  He established his own school which he called “Ryusei-Ha” in 1886.  He propagated his own style and it became recognized as a new art form.  He wrote many books of which “Yodoshu” is one of them.  He was the first person to establish correspondence study in Ikebana and a new way of teaching the art of Ikebana at the beginning of the Showa period.  He was recognized in the art world and the school became one of the top three Ikebana schools in Japan.  He died in 1932 when he was 74 years old.

His son called Kakyu became the head of the school.  In 1935, he established his own publication called “Ryusei” for students, and started to teach abroad in Korea and Manchuria.  In 1939, he built the Flower School called “Kado Kaikan” for the all the members.  In 1944 he died when he was 51 years old.  In 1944, Kasen became the third generation to direct the lemoto.

“Ryusei Kaikan” was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War.  In 1946, after the war, they rebuilt “Ryusei Kado Kaikan” in Ichigaya, Tokyo.  The 80th anniversary was commemorated in 1966.

The new center for doing many activities of the school, like doing research on how plants grow, learning different art forms with color, and designing with different materials including living things, and still preserving the traditional forms of Ikebana like Rikka and Seika arrangements.

Head master Kasen Yoshimura is actively attending the World Conventions of Ikebana International.  Recently, he has named a successor “Kashu” to direct his school.

His work of art is well received in the world as a new form of Ikebana.
